Day seven: Finals day in Birmingham
It’s set to be a busy Sunday at the Edgbaston Priory Club with two semi-finals set to be complete before both the women’s and men’s singles finals of the Lexus Birmingham Open.
For the second day in a row Belgium’s Greet Minnen will return to complete a match, currently trailing 4-3 and a break down to Rebeka Masarova.
The winner will play Linda Fruhvirtova in the final after she beat Jessika Ponchet in three sets yesterday.
In the men’s singles, Otto Virtanen will face America's Colton Smith after he knocked out third seed Rinky Hijikata in their delayed semi-final match this morning.
Fourth seeds Sadio Doumbia and Marcelo Demoliner were victorious in the men's doubles final - they defeated Diego Hidalgo and Patrik Trhac 6-4, 3-6, 10-5 in an hour and 26 minutes.
Men's
Up-and-coming star Smith is looking to double his number of ATP Challenger titles as he booked his place in the final. He came through 6-3, 6-4 against Hijikata in an hour and 17 minutes.
Smith got the deciding break in the first set before rain delays put a stop to play on Friday night. The world No.162 produced more of the same when the match resumed this morning.
He once again managed to get in front of the Australian with his second break of the match before going on to secure the victory.
Doumbia and Demoliner came back from losing the second set to secure their first title together.
A second ATP Challenger title for both players this year, Doumbia and Demoliner had to hold their never going into the final tie break.
After a close start, the pair got a key break at 5-5 and won the next four points to take the Lexus Birmingham Open title.

The final line ups are incomplete as rainy showers at the Edgbaston Priory Club disrupted play during the Lexus Birmingham Open semi-finals.
Linda Fruhvirtova is the first player to book their place in tomorrow’s final after defeating 2024 Ilkley runner-up Jessika Ponchet.
Rebeka Masarova will face Greet Minnen in the semi-final after she came through her quarter-final match against Kimberly Birrell earlier today.
Meanwhile, in the men's draw, Finland’s Otto Virtanen has defeated world No.101 Brandon Holt to reach the final. His opponent will be decided when the only seeded player remaining Rinky Hijikata takes on America's Colton Smith.
The men's double final will see fourth seeds Sadio Doumbia and Marcelo Demoliner take on Diego Hidalgo and Patrik Trhac.
Women’s
Fruhvirtova fights back from losing nine games in a row to win her semi-final 6-2, 0-6, 6-4 against Ponchet in an hour and 35 minutes.
Fruhvirtova got the early break and ran away with the first set but Ponchet turned the match around in the second – winning six straight games to level the score.
Fruhvirtova, who saved three match points in her second round tie against Heather Watson, held her nerve after going 3-0 down in the third, fighting back to level the score and get the decisive break before serving out the match.
Men's
Virtanen is on his way to his seventh ATP Challenger Tour final after winning to America’s Holt 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(7).
After a tight three sets, there wasn’t much between the two players as it came down to a final set tie break. It was the world No.114 who’s dominant serving made the difference – he score 23 aces throughout the match – and he was soon able break away and secure the victory.
The semi-final line-up for the Lexus Birmingham Open is set after a busy Friday at the Edgbaston Priory Club.
British teenage star Mimi Xu’s fantastic run cam to an end as she lost to 2024 Ilkley runner-up Jessika Ponchet. Ponchet will face Linda Fruhvirtova who came through in straight sets.
Meanwhile Belgium's Greet Minnen and Australia's Kimberly Birrell won their second round matches today but will have to return to finish their quarter-final tomorrow.
In the men's draw, Brandon Holt, Otto Virtanen, Rinky Hijikata and Colton Smith are all into the semi-finals.
Women's
17-year-old Xu showed signs of the form that has seen her pick up her first two WTA 125 wins this week, but eventually lost to the French star Ponchet 6-2, 6-4 in an hour and 25 minutes.
Mistakes took hold of Xu’s game from the off as she quickly went down 4-1 in the opening set. The young Brit dug deep to keep the score line from widening further. She saved seven of the nine break points she faced, but it wasn't long before the world No. 140 rounded off the set.
The 17-year-old had moments of magic as she went up a break after three strong holds of serve in the second set, but Ponchet showed her experience - winning the next three games to take the match.
Ponchet will face Linda Fruhvirtova in the semi-finals. The Czech player came through her quarter-final against Italy's Lucrezia Stefanini 6-4, 6-3.
Kimberly Birrell and Greet Minnen both came through tight second round matches earlier in the day before facing off in the quarter-finals.
The pair were locked at one set apiece and 4-3 to Minnen on the Belgian's serve when poor light brought play to a close.
Spanish Australian duo, Cristina Bucsa and Destanee Aiava won the women's doubles title late in the day thanks to a 6-4, 6-2 win over Brit Alicia Barnett and Elixane Lechemia.
Men's
World No.101 Holt booked his spot in the semi-finals after winning 6-4, 6-3 in just an hour and 10 minutes against five-time ATP title winner Adrian Mannarino.
He'll face Finland's Virtanen in the next round after he defeated qualifier Coleman Wong 6-2, 7-5.
Third seed Hijikata continued him impressive run in Birmingham with another victory over a fellow Australian - knocking out qualifier Alex Bolt 7-6(7), 6-4.
After coming through his second round match earlier in the day, Colton Smith went on to defeat 2024 Surbiton champion Lloyd Harris 6-3, 6-7(3), 6-4 in two and a half hours.
It was a disruptive day at the Lexus Birmingham Open with rain delays causing disruption at the combined WTA 125 and ATP Challenger event.
On the women's side, Rebeka Masarova secured a second round win over Viktorija Golubic 6-2, 7-6(1) to reach the quarter-finals.
Meanwhile, Otto Vertanen came through a tight three-set match against Swiss star Marc-Andrea Huesler 6-3, 6-(6), 6-1.
Former Surbiton champion Lloyd Harris also secured his spot in the quarter-finals with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Spain's Martin Landaluce, while Coleman Wong came back from a set down to beat qualifier Zachary Svajda 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Doubles
British doubles duo Johannus Monday and David Stevenson have secured their spot in the semi-finals after sealing a comprehensive 6-4, 6-4 victory over Nicolas Barrientos and Rithvik Choudary Bollipalli
Later on, Alicia Barnett will bid for a spot in the women's doubles final as she and Frenchwoman Elixane Lechemia take on Jessika Ponchet and Magali Kempen.
British teenager Mimi Xu is into the quarter-finals of the WTA 125 event at the Lexus Birmingham Open after an epic comeback win over world No.142 Katarzyna Kawa.
Meanwhile, fellow GB stars Heather Watson and Jodie Burrage bowed out in the second round on a day interrupted by rain.
In the men's singles Rinky Hijikata leads the way into the quarter-finals as the only seeded player left in the draw
Women's
17-year-old Xu was down a set and 5-3 before rallying back to defeat the Polish star Kawa 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 in two hours and 24 minutes.
Xu – who is supported by the LTA Pro Scholarship Programme, presented by Lexus – saved six break points in the second set before reeling off four straight games to level at one set apiece.
The young Briton got her first win at WTA 125 level on Monday against top seed Alycia Parks and went on to double her tally for the week after breaking four times in the final set.
She will move on to play Jessika Ponchet in the final eight, after the 2024 Ilkley runner-up knocked out former British No.1 Watson 6-4, 5-7, 7-5.
Watson showed great fight to come through a tight second set and had three match points in the third but couldn’t get over the line. Ponchet went on to break at 5-5 before serving out the match after over two and a half hours.
Burrage had to deal with several rain delays in her match against Linda Fruhvirtova, eventually losing out to the Czech star 6-0, 6-4.
Fruhvirtova – who knocked out third seed and Miami Open semi-finalist Alexandra Eala in the last round – will play Lucrezia Stefanini next after the Italian knocked out Valentina Ryser in straight sets.
Men’s
Australia's Hijikata backed up his opening round win against Britain's Billy Harris with an emphatic 6-1, 6-3 victory over Yosuke Watanuki to reach the quarter-final.
The former Australian Open men's doubles champion will fancy his chances this week in Birmingham now as the last seed and top 100 player left in the draw.
He will play countryman Alex Bolt in the next round after the 32-year-old showed his class on the grass with a 6-2, 6-3 victory against Li Tu.
World No.101 Brandon Holt got the day off to a strong start with a convincing 6-2, 6-2 win over Murphy Cassone.
He will play France's Adrian Mannarino in the quarter-finals, who knocked out Nicolas Jarry 7-6(6), 6-3.
Mannarino has won two ATP titles on grass in his career - 2019 in s’Hertgenbosch and 2023 in Newport.
It was a winning return to the grass for Jodie Burrage who secured victory in her first match on the surface since 2023.
23-year-old Johannus Monday narrowly lost out in a three-set battle against Coleman Wong, before home favourite Dan Evans came out on the losing side of two tie-break sets against Murphy Cassone to exit in the first round.
Women's
It was a memorable return to the grass for Burrage who needed just an hour and 17 minutes to brush aside Croatia's Jana Fett 6-3, 6-4 and reach the second round in Birmingham.
After comfortably taking the opening set, Burrage quickly trailed an early break in the second after Fett clinched a break to love. However, the Brit showed great resilience to turn the scoreboard back in her favour - stringing together a run of four games before closing out the victory on her first match point.
Burrage now joins British teenager Mimi Xu and Heather Watson in the second round where she will face Linda Fruhvirtova, who earlier beat Miami Open semi-finalist Alexandra Eala 7-5, 6-7(5), 6-1.
Elsewhere, Kimberly Birrell, Greet Minnen and Robin Montgomery all came through their first round matches.
In the doubles, Alicia Barnett and French doubles partner Elixane Lechemia upset top seeds Nadiia Kichenok and Yifan Xu as they earned a 4-6, 6-1, 10-6 victory.
However, it wasn't to be for all-British duo Watson and Emily Appleton who lost out in a 7-5, 7-5 defeat to Cristina Bucsa and Destanee Aiava.
Men's
Home favourite Evans narrowly lost out in a match of fine margins to American Cassone 7-6(5), 7-6(5) in two hours and 16 minutes.
After Cassone hunted down what looked to be the deciding break to serve out the match, the Brit was handed a lifeline after responding immediately to force a second successive tie-break.
Despite Evans edging out to a 5-3 lead, it was the 22-year-old American who managed to turn things around – going on to win the next four points in a row to close out his first tour-level win on a grass court.
Wild card Monday battled back from a set down to force a deciding set against Miami Open breakthrough star Wong but eventually lost out 6-1, 5-7, 6-3 in an hour and 45 minutes.
Monday – who has claimed two M25 titles on the ITF Tour so far this year – did well to force a decider after breaking Wong at the last opportunity, but a double break from the world No.175 put the match out of reach for the Brit.
Meanwhile, wins also came for qualifier Alex Bolt who downed eighth seed Mackenzie McDonald, Finland's Otto Virtanen, Brandon Holt and former world No.47 Marc-Andrea Huesler.
It’s been an incredible start for the Brits in the WTA 125 event at the Lexus Birmingham Open with both 17-year-old Mimi Xu and former British No.1 Heather Watson knocking out seeded players in the opening round.
However, Britain’s Jay Clarke was narrowly defeated by last year’s Surbiton champion Lloyd Harris in a close battle on the Ann Jones Court.
Women's
Wild card Xu defeated world No.52 and top seed Alycia Parks 6-1, 7-6(6) – to clinch the biggest win of the young Briton’s career so far.
Watson needed just over an hour to knock out eighth seed Olivia Gadecki 6-0, 6-3.
The young Brit – who is supported by the LTA Pro Scholarship Programme, presented by Lexus – showed great spirit having missed the chance to serve for the match at 5-4 to then turn around a 6-3 deficit in the tie-break and clinch a milestone victory.
This is only Xu’s first main draw at WTA 125 level and the three-time Lexus Junior Nationals title-winner now moves on to play Katarzyna Kawa in the next round.
Watson saved seven of seven break points in her first round match against the Australian Open mixed doubles champion in a comfortable victory for the 33-year-old British star.
Next up she will play last year’s runner-up in Ilkley, Jessika Ponchet of France, who defeated Vitalia Diatchenko 6-3, 6-2.
Meanwhile, fellow British wild card Amarni Banks lost in the opening round to Lucrezia Stefani 6-2, 6-4.
Tereza Martincova, Viktorija Golubic and Valentina Ryser are also through to the second round.
Men's
Clarke battled back from a set down to lead by a break in the decider but eventually lost out to big-serving South African Harris 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in an hour and 54 minutes.
The 26-year-old Brit – who won his fourth career ATP Challenger title last month – had a 3-1 advantage in the final set, but an impressive double break from Harris helped him through to the second round.
British No.4 Harris also came back from a set down in his opening round match against third seed and world No.78 Rinky Hijikata but eventually lost 6-1, 3-6, 6-4.
Having come back from 3-1 down, Harris had two opportunities to break at 4-4 but the Australian held out before clinching his fourth break of the match to seal victory.
Elsewhere Nicolas Jarry beat Tristan Schoolkate 6-7(8), 6-4, 6-4 and Brits Jack Pinnington Jones and Giles Hussey lost in qualifying.
The grass court season is officially underway as women’s qualifying at the Lexus Birmingham Open kick-started on Saturday, with several Brits picking up victories.
Lily Miyazaki, Ella McDonald and Ranah Stoiber are all through to the second round of qualifying tomorrow as they bid for a spot in Monday’s main draw.
29-year-old Miyazaki got her grass court season started with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 win over eighth seed Celine Naef. She’ll play another Swiss star in the next round up against Valentina Ryser.
Meanwhile, British rising stars and qualifying wild cards McDonald and Stoiber both came through in straight sets.
19-year-old McDonald beat third seed and world No.157 Whitney Osuigwe 7-5, 7-6(5) to set up a match with the experienced Czech star Tereza Martincova.
Stoiber knocked fourth seed Sara Saito of Japan 6-3, 7-6(5) and will now have to play Vitalia Diatchenko for a main draw spot.
Emily Appleton, Amelia Rajecki and Naiktha Bains all lost out in the first round of qualifying.
Qualifying: Pinnington Jones & Hussey into second round of qualifying
The qualifying stages continued at the Lexus Birmingham Open with Jack Pinnington Jones and Giles Hussey both getting off to a winning start but it wasn't to be for Lily Miyazaki, Ella McDonald and Ranah Stoiber who all lost out on in the second round of qualifying for the WTA 250 event.
Pinnington Jones got his bid for main draw action underway with a convincing 6-1, 6-4 win over Frenchman Hugo Grenier.
Meanwhile, Hussey secured a comeback victory over Frenchman Terence Atmane, eventually prevailing 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 to reach the second round of qualifying.
Miyazaki fell short to Swiss star Valentina Ryser 6-3, 7-5 in an hour and 21 minutes, while wild card Stoiber put up a strong fight against world No.71 Vitalia Diatchenko but eventually lost out 7-6(4), 6-3.
McDonald bowed out to Tereza Martincova 6-1, 6-1.
On the men's side Kyle Edmund, Alastair Gray, Aidan McHugh, Oliver Crawford, Stuart Parker, Henry Searle, Charles Broom and Ryan Peniston all lost out in the first round of qualifying.
